Chief Shatka Bear Step Ring
Long ago, 40+ years, I raised and showed Appaloosa horses in Missouri. In, I think it was, 1969 at the age of 18 I attended and showed at the Oklahoma City National Show. While there I purchased from Chief Shatka Bear Step a very unusual turquoise and silver ring. At this time due to the economy and other unforseen circumstances, I am being forced to sell a number of "personal treasures" including my Bear Step ring. The stone in the ring is unusual being actually turquoise chips and silver foil in a black matrix. I remember having quite a conversatiuon with Chief Bear Step about the ring, and his telling me that he had purchased that slabbed stone and a number of similar others from a Navajo. He told of trying to get the Navajo to teach him the process, and being refused. At the time that I purchased the ring, The gentleman that he had bought the stones from had died and my ring was the last piece of jewelry he had with that stone.
